Business Name Checklist
A practical checklist for comparing name directions before you spend time on legal or domain checks.
Say it, spell it, write it
A name passes this step when you can say it in one breath, spell it from memory, and write it without checking. Remove options that create repeated letters, ambiguous endings, or words that sound like another word in your industry.
Test the name in context: “Book an appointment with X”, “The invoice is from X”, and “Follow X for updates”. If the sentence feels awkward, the name may be too long or grammatically tricky.
Check the category and audience fit
Write the intended industry, tone, and audience next to each candidate. A playful name can be right for a beverage brand and wrong for an advisory firm even when both options are memorable.
The generator rationale should match the market signal. If your industry preset suggests a modern, invented direction but your customers expect a traditional partner structure, that mismatch will show up in the final brand.
Reserve practical checks for the final three
Once you have three directions, run a state or national business name search, check the domain, and review the trademark landscape. The USPTO and WIPO publish official guidance on the difference between a business name and a trademark.
A domain search link from this site opens a registrar search; it does not confirm availability. Domain availability can change, and a domain search is not a trademark search.
Keep a shortlist with reasons
Save the names that survive, then write one sentence for each explaining what it communicates. This makes the final decision easier when two names score equally on spelling and searchability.
The shortlist in the business name generator stores names locally on your device. Use it as a working list, then move the survivors into a document before you start legal checks.
